From the artist: This artwork depicts a girl with butterfly wings, specifically a monarch butterfly. Butterflies have become a symbol of migrants since they move freely from one place to another. In the case of the monarch butterflies, they migrate between Canada and Mexico, sometimes making stops in the United States.
Jamie Zepeda is an artist/illustrator from Huntington Park, California. She has received her AA from the College of Southern Nevada and her BA from UNLV. Zepeda is currently attending Nevada State College for a BA in Animation and is working for the City of Las Vegas under the Office of Cultural Affairs.
Zepeda's work is primarily focused on bright colors and the way they are used within Mexican culture. She takes a lot of inspiration from her cultural background, particularly the state of Michoacán where her family is from. Zepeda's goal is to promote social change and represent Latinx people in a world where they are so underrepresented, despite how much of the population they make up.
She is currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada.
