Love Triangle

By Madison Kleinrock-Andrews

I did not realize that this

was war

until it was

too late.

Which loss do I mourn more?

Who left the deeper wound?

The boy

who deserted me,

who betrayed my love

at the first flimsy promise

of something better,

like the soldier that

betrays his country

for a reward

that will never actually

be delivered?

Or the girl

who I thought was

my ally,

but who was actually

a spy

that used the information

I confided in her

as a weapon

against me?

What a

brutal battle.

I did not realize that this

was war,

but I guess

I lost.

About the piece: This poem is all about aspects of lost love. “Love Triangle” is from the perspective of someone who was in a love triangle and had to watch their beloved choose their best friend.

Madison Kleinrock-Andrews was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and she is now a sophomore at UNLV. She is a Pre-Professional Biological Sciences major in the Honors College, and her ultimate career goal is to become a pediatric endocrinologist. Why is a science major writing poetry? Because she enjoys writing and does not believe that scientists are incapable of being creative. In fact, creativity is necessary in order to make new scientific discoveries. People can and should be multiple things. There is nothing wrong with not fitting into neat boxes and labels.
