Web & Graphic Design Team FAQ

What does Beyond Thought’s Web and Graphic Design Team (WGDT) do?

We handle all the graphic and website design for the journal, including the Beyond Thought journal itself. That includes creating social media posts, banners, flyers, and videos as well as updating and maintaining the website. The team works closely with the marketing and events teams, often on-call to make sure that their ideas come to life. Towards the end of the semester, we come together to work on the Beyond Thought Journal, which highlights the best submissions of the semester in an artistic and eye-catching way, as well as upload all the semester’s submissions to the website.

Do I need any qualifications or previous WGD experience to join the team?

Nope- just a willingness to learn. Part of being on the WGD team includes basic training in Canva and Squarespace and more. Feel free to bring whatever experiences you have in whatever field or program as well! New ideas, skills, and programs are always more ways to make the team better. Don’t feel pressured if you’ve never done any graphic or web design and want a fun and safe place to experiment and learn.

How much time/work will I need to commit as a WGDT MEMBER?

It depends. WGDT members can specialize in different areas depending on what they want to do the most. Members working on social media posts may be committing more time versus members who’d rather focus on updating the website for example, but the team will always work together to keep the workload more fun than stressful. Towards the end of the semester will be more busy as we work together to create the e-magazine, but even then, the WGD team will never forget you have a life outside of Beyond Thought. You can commit a few hours a week to Beyond Thought or only do a project or two a month, it really is up to you.

What do i get to do as a member of the WGDT?

A better question is what do you want to do? Being a part of the WGD team gives you a way to do almost anything as far as graphic and web design. You can design webpages, write copy, learn website layouts, pay attention to small edits and details, do quick website updates, etc. You can also design social media posts of all kinds, create marketing flyers and materials, innovate ways to share about our events, submissions, e-magazine, etc., work on multimedia or video projects- whatever strikes your fancy. You’ll for sure get the chance to create a multi-page document at the end of the semester, but even if that isn’t your cup of tea, there’s a chance to do just about anything as part of the WGD team.

How often does the team meet?

The WGD team is still new, but at most, the WGD team has bi-weekly, hour-long meetings to check-in and see how everyone’s doing. For sure we’ll have a few meetings towards the beginning of the semester to meet each other, learn programs, and get a feel for how things will work for the semester. At the end of the semester, we’ll have a few meeting to prep for the e-magazine, assign tasks, edit and review the magazine together. For most of the semester, we’d mostly be in touch via Slack to get website update requests, sign-up for social media posts, bounce off ideas, etc. Those helping with event or marketing designs may also want to sit in on Event Team or Marketing Team meetings to help pitch ideas or work together on projects.
